Hello Family and Friends,
I just want to share some information on a great honor that Jordyn has received for Art.
Jordyn’s art teacher submitted one of her art pieces in The Scholastic Art Competion for the Harris County School district. Out of 1100 entries throughout the region; 150 Gold Key awards (highest honor) were given and 160 Silver key awards were given for grades 7th-11th.

Jordyn received 1 of the 150 Gold Keys (highest honor). The district had a reception Feb. 4th for theregional award recipients. There pieces were on display through out the reception area and all the winners had an opportunity to introduce themselves, their teacher, and school to the audience of over 700 people. Obviously, we had no idea of what a great acheivement this was until we got there; the Superintendent recognized the young artist and their accomplishment. Of course, Jordyn was soooo nonchalant about the whole ordeal….but that’s Jordyn.

Now ,it was told to the audience and in written packets given to the award recipients of the Gold Key that their art would be sent to New York City to be judged on a National level for scholastics through out the country. The national award recipients would be notified and invited to the Big Apple where there pieces would be on display and they’d be honored with a reception at Carnegie Hall.

Jordyn’s art teacher, Ms. Guiterrez emailed me today to notify us that Jordyn’s art was selected and she was going to New York. We are very excited and proud of Jordyn as this true gift that is so natural for her is developing into something bigger than we could imagine. Moreover, art has been apart of Jordyn’s past time since she was 1 years old. Thanks to Grandma (Artist) Eliska Williams who has always been very instrumental in helping Jordyn to foster and grow (always allowing her to paint, draw, color, or whatever etc., when she is at Grandma’s house) in her God given talent.

I am embarrassed yet proud to say that though we appreciate all forms of art, love to go to galleries to view art, and have quite an extensive collection of pieces from well renowned artist; We did not understand or realize the level of skill that Jordyn displayed in “Heinz Ketchup Bottles” neither did Jordyn:)!

WOW!!! (Proud Pappa!)

(CNN) — A massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake rocked Chile early Saturday, killing at least 122 people and triggering tsunami warnings for the entire Pacific basin.

“I would like to offer my condolences to the families of the 122 people who lost their lives during the earthquake,” said Chilean President-Elect Sebastian Pinera. “And by the way, the number of victims could get higher.”

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said she expected the death toll to rise.

“We are taking all the necessary measures at this time,” she said.

Officials did not give any information on the number of those injured. The full extent of the damage was not yet known, although there were reports of collapsed buildings and hundreds of people in the streets.

The capital of Santiago lost electricity and basic services including water and telephones. Bachelet said regional hospitals had suffered damage; some were evacuated. A major bridge connecting northern and southern Chile was rendered inoperable, and the Santiago airport was shut down for at least the next 24 hours.

News from: United States Geological Survey’s (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program

Earthquake Summary

Tectonic Summary

This earthquake occurred at the boundary between the Nazca and South American tectonic plates. The two plates are converging at a rate of 80 mm per year. The earthquake occurred as thrust-faulting on the interface between the two plates, with the Nazca plate moving down and landward below the South American plate.

Coastal Chile has a history of very large earthquakes. Since 1973, there have been 13 events of magnitude 7.0 or greater. The February 27 shock originated about 230 km north of the source region of the magnitude 9.5 earthquake of May, 1960 – the largest instrumentally recorded earthquake in the world. This magnitude 9.5 earthquake killed 1655 people in southern Chile and unleashed a tsunami that crossed the Pacific, killing 61 people in Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines. Approximately 870 km to the north of the February 27 earthquake is the source region of the magnitude 8.5 earthquake of November, 1922. This great quake significantly impacted central Chile, killing several hundred people and causing severe property damage. The 1922 quake generated a 9-meter local tsunami that inundated the Chile coast near the town of Coquimbo; the tsunami also crossed the Pacific, washing away boats in Hilo harbor, Hawaii. The magnitude 8.8 earthquake of February 27, 2010 ruptured the portion of the South American subduction zone separating these two massive historical earthquakes.

A large vigorous aftershock sequence can be expected from this earthquake.

From HuffingtonPost.com:

Republicans have turned overwhelmingly against President Obama, while Democrats are still largely supportive — leading to the most polarized approval ratings ever recorded during a president’s first year in office, a new report by Gallup finds.

Over the course of this past year, Obama has averaged a job approval rating of 88 percent among Democrats and just 23 percent among Republicans, according to the study released on Monday morning. That year-one 65-point margin is the largest that the public opinion research firm has ever recorded.

Tonight at 9:00PM EST, the President will give his first State of the Union Address. He will talk directly to the American people about restoring security for middle class families after a lost decade of declining wages, eroding retirement security and escalating health care and tuition costs.

Immediately afterwards, we will hold a live video discussion with top policy officials working on the domestic policy, jobs and the economy in particular, and foreign policy.

Watch it all live at WhiteHouse.gov/live

Join the discussion during the address, and the chat afterwards through Facebook

Also, as we announced earlier this week, we are partnering with YouTube, who will be soliciting questions for the President in the days following the speech – submit your own or vote on others’. The President will then answer some of those questions in a unique live event next week.

As a final note, for those who have their own websites, as always you can embed the live stream on your site using the code found at the “share” button at WhiteHouse.gov/live.
