In the past, Anita Baker has had some not-so-kind things to say about hip-hop, but it appears that has all changed.

Although Luther Vandross was an accomplished songwriter who penned songs for himself and artists like Aretha Franklin, he was also loved for his ability to reinterpret songs that we all knew and loved.

This talent put him in a league with singers like Frank Sinatra and Isaac Hayes who were loved for their ability to make you think that they were the first person to sing those songs.

Prefacing it with a bit of the Stevie Wonder-penned Aretha Franklin classic “Until You Come Back To Me,” Luther took The Carpenters’ AM radio classic “Superstar” and filled it with a ton of soul.

Brenda Russell’s original version of “If Only For One Night” became immediately obsolete once Luther’s 1985 cover version hit the market.

Originally recorded by Stevie Wonder on his Fulfillingness’ First Finale album in 1974, Luther claimed this one for himself and made his version the one preferred by many.

Luther closed out his debut album with this version of the Burt Bacharach/Hal David standard, infusing it with so much soul that he had to drag it out for seven minutes!

If This World Were Mine (duet with Cheryl Lynn)

The Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell classic got the Luther treatment with a little help from Cheryl Lynn.  The two put their own special brand of stank on it!

Slowly but surely, the buzz surrounding Aloe Blacc grows.

The west coast singer with Panamanian roots gained some notoriety for his 2006 album, Shine Through, and also for his song “I Need A Dollar” which served as the theme song for the HBO series “How To Make It In America.”

In this video, Aloe tackles Michael Jackson’s classic “Billie Jean” and gives it an incredibly bluesy feel!

With four albums under his belt, Dwele’s fifth is shaping up to be more of the same.

The Detroit singer’s upcoming fifth album, W.W.W. (W.ants W.orld W.omen), due out June 29th, seems to be following the same formula of his other releases.

While Dwele is an incredibly gifted producer and musician, when it comes to his lyrics, they are often cringe inducing and make me feel embarrassed for him having to sing them (case in point, 2007’s “Flapjacks“)

The latest leak from W.W.W. is no exception.  “I Wish” seems like a blunted stream of consciousness ramble set to music.

Maybe Dwele should consider taking a cue from Elton John and find his own Bernie Taupin.

Vikter Duplaix may not be a familiar name to many of you, but surely you’ve heard his work before.

The multi-talented singer-songwriter-producer-DJ has made a name for himself over the last 10+ years penning and producing songs for Erykah Badu (”Green Eyes“), Eric Benet (”Love Of My Own“), Leela James (”My Joy“) and Musiq (”Momentinlife“) to name but a few.

He’s also got an impressive career as a solo artist, having released two albums and being nominated for a Grammy in 2008 for his song “Make A Baby.”

In 2010, he’s gearing up for the release of a brand new album and just released the video for the lead single “Electric Love,” a slow and sexy jam that should come packaged with birth control pills and a couple of condoms.

If anyone can relate to label drama it’s R&B star Leela James. Before the release of her latest album My Soul, she severed an eight-year relationship with Warner Brothers Records and  is now recording with Staxx.

“Warner is a big machine but you can get lost,” she says. “The support really wasn’t there. It doesn’t matter if you have this big fancy house if it’s not a home. I was originally signed in 2000 and my first record didn’t come out until 2005. Plus I had shady management…”

This doesn’t mean that she is free of red tape and industry problems. While she has a great duet on her new album with Raheem Devaughn, “Mr. Incredible/Ms. Unforgettable” another collab with Anthony Hamilton didn’t make the final cut of My Soul.

“That’s what happens behind the scenes,” she shares. “It wasn’t because we didn’t do the song, it was label stuff.”

However, that hasn’t stopped her from putting together a really quality project. My Soul features production from Chucky Thompson and features some personal must-hear songs like “The Fact Is.” The gut-wrenching ballad laments her inability to shake loose of an old love and she admits it comes from personal experience.

“You can tell yourself that you’re over something but then you’re like ‘I still think about this idiot!,” says James.
